Let’s face it… cartoons are not only fun to draw, but strangely satisfying. I think the inner child in all of us gets a real kick out of reading comics or watching a good old fashioned cartoon animation and trying to replicate your favorite character. However, bringing a unique cartoon drawing to life and giving it a persona is a totally different ‘kettle of fish’.
In saying that though, there have been a countless number of artists who have done just that. Normal folk like you or me, who have put in the hours (obviously) honing their craft – have gone on to legendary status. The likes of Walt Disney & Matt Groening to name a couple, had their humble beginnings. While Matt Groening’s ‘The Simpson’s’ has become one of the most popular American animated sitcoms to date, Walt Disney’s name alone is practically synonymous with cartoon animation.
Whether or not you have the ambition to go on to glory, it is possible to enjoy earning money while developing your drawing skills. While some may desire to learn how to draw cartoons just for the share pleasure of it, others may want to make a little pocket money or pay the mortgage. What ever your motivation, it’s fun, very rewarding and profitable if your that way inclined.
We live in a fantastic age. Computer technology has opened up a Pandora’s box of modern tools, which can be used to produce artwork of the highest professional caliber. Not only that, but the Internet has now made it possible to turn your ‘work of art’ into cold hard cash (don’t you love the sound of that).
You may have heard of some of the tools available. Software such as Adobe CS4, has a huge array of programs that you can use to produce final artwork and spread it across every possible multi-media application known to man. However, if one is on a limited budget and wanted to get started immediately, there is an open source (that means free!) software called ‘Paint.Net’. It is essentially a photo editing software much the same as Adobe Photoshop, which is great for importing a sketch into in order to render the final image.
Once you learn how to draw cartoons, there are many other benefits, besides making money, that are open to you. Since the beginning of time man has had a close affiliation to drawing. People tend to be of this misconception that one is born with a gift and is extremely talented. They don’t believe for a second that it can be learned; let alone conceive that they could ever learn to draw. So basically, you’ll become the admiration of your peers, family, friends and girlfriend or potential (if you know what I mean).
